Annual Sustainability Report and Sustainable Development goalsWe are proud to announce the release of our ninth Annual Sustainability, now including our Sustainable Development Goals Report. This report is key for tracking our progress and reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility.

This report for 2023/24 proudly celebrates our significant progress in sustainability and celebrates the positive sustainability impact our staff and students deliver. Please review and share this excellent work.

This year, we achieved joint 18th place in the People and Planet University League table, highlighting our commitment to making a positive impact. The report also reveals that we ranked joint 89th globally in the , out of 1,700 universities worldwide.

These accomplishments are made possible thanks to the ongoing dedication of our staff and students, whose daily actions and positive behaviours play a vital role in achieving our sustainability goals.

Professor Jane Harrington, Vice-Chancellor and CEO, said:

At Greenwich we recognise the importance of sustainability, and it is great to see how much we have achieved so far. I look forwards to supporting the commitments and actions of our staff and student communities as we continue our path to further sustainability innovation and positive impact in the years ahead.

Key highlights for 2023/24 include:

  • Launch of the Avery Hill Air Source Heat Pump which has decarbonised Avery Hill campus by 54.3%.
  • Reduced our carbon emissions by 26% year on year, related to the fossil fuels we directly use (Scope 1).
  • Achieved the Athena Swan Bronze Award through the university’s important work in gender equality.
  • The Furniture Reuse Scheme avoided £72,000 of additional expenditure by internally relocating items, saving 4.4 tonnes on waste.
  • Ranked 75th in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers list 11th in the Education Sector through the university’s work in equality for LGBTQI+ communities.
  • Partnered with IBM to produce and deliver a sustainability staff development course for professional and academic staff.
  • Launched our Race Action Plan.
  • Piloted a food waste trial at Devonport Halls to improve waste segregation and best practice.

Much of the progress we’re making is driven by individuals within our academic and professional services teams. Teaching staff have been integrating sustainability into their courses, while other staff members have been focused on reducing our environmental impact through energy-saving initiatives and resource reuse.

Our students continue to make a notable difference, with over 1,513 bags of items donated to the British Heart Foundation through our end-of-term reuse scheme.

However, we acknowledge that there is still room for improvement, such as increasing our recycling rates through better waste segregation, reusing hot drinks containers, and encouraging both staff and students to engage more with our green spaces to promote well-being and foster a greater awareness of nature.
