Overview
Our International Comparative Law Summer School provides a unique programme analysing and comparing English and American legal systems. Our two courses, delivered in collaboration with Mitchell Hamline Law School (USA), will give a unique opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between the legal systems and laws of the UK and US.
All classes will be hyflex which will combine face-to-face and online learning. For those registered for face-to-face, classes will be taught in the historic Old Royal Naval College on the bank of the River Thames in South East London.
This iconic World Heritage Site receives millions of tourists each year who visit the nearby Royal Observatory meridian line, Cutty Sark ship, historic market and museums. Our campus can be seen in many movies including Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean, and TV series such as The Crown.
All courses, delivered in collaboration with Mitchell Hamline Law School in the USA, will give a unique opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between the legal systems and laws of the UK and US. There will also be a guest lectures from other partner institutions such as Bennett University, India and Bahcesehir University, Turkey. Students enrolled in this programme will have a rigorous, experiential coursework including site visits related to the course material from a variety of perspectives—from technology, criminal law, & human rights, to health law. The courses are comprised of a combination of lectures, class discussion, and extensive small group break-out sessions that require a hands-on practical application of topics under discussion. Students will have the opportunity to hear from guest lectures by legal scholars from the 樱花影视, and other experts in human rights and legal practice. The classroom environment is designed to foster a truly global perspective, with students from various other countries participating and sharing insights, creating a rich, comparative learning experience. This program provides a unique opportunity to engage with multiple legal cultures and gain a global understanding of the evolving relationship between commerce and technology, and the business of health law.
Students may register for one or both courses, which run consecutively.

What will I study?
Course One: Advanced Criminal Law - Comparative Criminal, Constitutional, and Statutory Law and Practice: From the Crime to the CourtroomMonday, June 23–Friday, July 4, 2025 (classes will take place Monday–Friday, 10:30-12:00 and 13:00–16:30 BST) This dynamic course provides a comprehensive exploration of criminal law through a comparative lens, focusing on the intersection of technology, privacy, and legal systems across the UK, international law, and other global jurisdictions. Content will focus human rights in the age of digital technology, and students will analyse contemporary challenges such as cybercrime, digital privacy, and surveillance, how it is handled in criminal law, and the implications on human rights. The course will include site visits to prominent legal institutions, such as the Old Bailey Criminal Court, providing real-world context to the theoretical foundations of criminal justice and human rights. |
Course Two: Company and Partnership Law: Health Organization and FinanceMonday, July 7–Friday, July 18, 2025 (classes will take place Monday–Friday, 10:30-12:00 and 13:00-16:30 pm BST) In this course, we will explore the regulation, structure, and financing of the United States health care system, with a comparative approach that includes the UK and other health care systems to enrich our understanding of various health policy frameworks. Students will examine the structure and regulation of private health insurance coverage as well as Medicare and Medicaid, the two major public coverage programmes of the U.S as well as the UK’s NHS provisions and regulations. Policy questions regarding the appropriate division of responsibility between the public and private spheres in both funding and regulating coverage will be discussed, alongside considerations for ensuring access and affordability of health care. To further contextualise the study, students will engage in field trips and site visits, offering first hand insight into the organisational and operational differences between systems. Students will delve into the organization of health care entities such as hospitals, with a particular focus on issues concerning not-for-profit organisations. Additionally, the course will cover how governments work to prevent fraud and abuse in health care programmes, as well as examine antitrust concerns within the health care industry and efforts to prevent unlawful consolidation of market power. |
Course Delivery
Teaching: Courses will be led from an international perspective by skilled legal scholars. There will be a combination of lectures, class discussion, and small group break-out sessions that will provide hands-on practical application of the topics under discussion. You will discuss and examine law from a range of perspectives.
Location: Face-to-face classes will be held at the 樱花影视, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London - part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Online classes are also offered using a hyflex method so both face-to-face and online participants will be taught at the same time.

- At the end of the Programme and providing that you have attended at least 80% of the classes, you will receive an Attendance Certificate. The Attendance Certificate will state your name and your course but will say ‘Attended’ rather than give a grade.
Who is this Summer School for?
Undergraduate or Postgraduate students of law, international relations, politics, or any other related subject; legal and non-legal professionals. We also welcome those 18-25 that are interested in studying law at a university in future.
Entry Requirements
If you are currently a student, you will need to submit a letter from your university or college confirming that you are registered at, and attending, that institution.
Additionally, if you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you must have a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or a recognised equivalent.
If you have studied at an English-speaking institution, or have courses taught at your university in English (excluding English language courses) you may meet our requirements without having to supply IELTS (or a recognised equivalent). Where this is the case, evidence will need to be included on a transcript or by means of a letter from your university.
We also welcome applications from mature students and/or students with professional backgrounds.
